Senate

The Senate is composed of the entire professorial staff and the delegates of the representative body associations at UZH. It submits proposals to the Board of the University for the election of the President and Vice Presidents of the Executive Board of the University. Furthermore, the Senate can issue formal statements on issues of university-wide significance. (University Act § 30)

Since 1 April 2025, the Senate has hadorganization regulations (OrgR Senat; in German) with a management and new rights (Rights and Senate Management). Requests to the Senate have to be submitted in written form up to three months in advance.

As a rule, the Senate meets twice a year. Meetings are organized by the Senate Management. The number of delegates from each representative body association corresponds to 3%  of the number of professors. The Senate is currently made up of more than 850 voting members, with the President as its chair.

Senate Management

On 1 April 2025, a Senate Management chaired by the President was established for the Senate (§ 2 OrgR Senate). In addition to the President, the representative and deputy representative of the professorial staff hold an ex-officio seat on the Board of the University. The Secretary General is a member of the Management in an advisory capacity. The Senate may appoint up to two further voting members of the Senate to the Management.

The Management prepares the business and meetings of the Senate. In particular, it is vested with the authority to add items to the agenda beyond those submitted to it.
